The best part of driving around Mount Fuji was not finding one perfect viewpoint. It was seeing the same mountain change with the place, time and weather.
Our route began in Fujinomiya, moved through Lake Shoji and Lake Kawaguchiko, continued into Fujiyoshida and finished at Lake Yamanaka. This is the actual winter route we drove over two nights.
Route at a glance
- DAY 1: Shiraito Falls → Lake Tanuki → overnight at Lake Shoji
- DAY 2: Oishi Park → lunch in Fujiyoshida → Fuji-Q Highland → dinner and hotel near Fuji-Q
- DAY 3: late breakfast in Fujiyoshida → Lake Yamanaka
It was not designed around minimum driving time alone. Sunset, hotel location, Fuji-Q time and the direction of the next day mattered more.
DAY 1 — Fujinomiya and the western side of Fuji
We started at Shiraito Falls. The walk itself was short, and Mount Fuji was already visible from the parking-area side.
There are official and private parking options around the falls, so the first practical decision is simply where to leave the car before starting the walk.

The next morning we drove to Oishi Park on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchiko.
Current tourism information lists the park as always open, with more than 100 regular-car spaces and free parking. In winter, the lavender gives way to reeds, but the open lake-and-Fuji view remains the reason to stop.

We had lunch at Tonkatsu Genroku in Fujiyoshida. We found it while looking for somewhere open around New Year, and the tonkatsu and udon turned into one of the meals we remembered.

General admission is currently free, with individual ride tickets and passes available separately. Hours and ticket procedures vary by date.

We had a late dinner at Gyushige near Fuji-Q. It was useful precisely because we did not have to drive far after spending the whole day at the park.

Official tourism information puts it around a five-minute walk from Fuji-Q, and the hotel has a top-floor public bath and open-air bath. Our room looked toward both the amusement park and Mount Fuji.
On a Fuji-Q day, that short final transfer mattered more than squeezing in one more attraction.

We started with a late breakfast at Izumiya. The meal was simple grilled fish and udon, but the seasoning, crisp fish skin and rice made it memorable.

Local visitor information asks people to use dedicated swan feed rather than bread, crackers or sweets. We were also able to use roadside parking by the lake without difficulty during our visit.

Some of the best views happened between major attractions. Around Yanagida Bridge in Fuji City, Mount Fuji felt like part of an ordinary neighborhood rather than a destination.

Use this route as a framework, not a fixed schedule
- Move Fuji viewpoints earlier when visibility is good.
- If Fuji-Q is a major priority, avoid overloading that day with other stops.
- In winter, change the Lake Tanuki and Lake Shoji order if snow or road conditions require it.
- Choose hotels by the next morning’s route, not only by nightly price.
