On January 2, 2026, we were driving through Fuji with no plan to stop here.
Then the view outside the car changed: a small river, low houses, and Mount Fuji rising so naturally behind them. We pulled over for a while.
This was not a famous viewpoint or a sightseeing stop we had looked up in advance. That was exactly what made it memorable. For someone who lives here, this may be an ordinary street; for us, Mount Fuji appearing behind that ordinary neighborhood was the whole reason to stop.
A quick stop that became a long one
The photos were taken around Yanagida Bridge (柳田橋).
Mount Fuji appeared between the river, homes and utility lines in a way that felt very different from seeing it at a well-known viewpoint. Here, it did not feel like a landmark set apart from daily life. It felt woven into the neighborhood itself.
We thought we would take a few photos and keep driving, but we stayed much longer than expected.
Beautiful views often make me think about coming back someday. This one prompted a different thought: what would it be like to live in a neighborhood like this for a month?
The idea of seeing Mount Fuji beyond the same streets and houses every day stayed with me long after we left.
A small river through the neighborhood
Yanagida Bridge crosses a river in the Nishikicho area of Fuji. Fuji City identifies the river here as the Kourui River (小潤井川).
We had not stopped for the bridge or the river itself. But after getting out and walking around, the small waterway and quiet residential streets became just as much a part of the memory as Mount Fuji.
