Nihondaira Yume Terrace was one of the places I visited on my first journey to Shizuoka.
On later travels, I had chances to see Mt. Fuji much closer and larger. Looking back at the photographs now, the mountain seen from here was not the most gigantic view.
Yet it remains vividly in mind. Driving up the winding hill with no clear expectation, and suddenly catching sight of Fuji rising quietly beyond the coastline and the city, left a lasting impression.
A 360-degree panorama above the hill
Perched on the summit of Nihondaira at roughly 300 metres above sea level, this observatory looks out across Suruga Bay, Shimizu Port, Miho-no-Matsubara pine grove, and the distant Izu Peninsula.
Rather than isolating the peak alone, what felt special was seeing Mt. Fuji sitting naturally as a quiet backdrop to the working city, ports, and sea.
Floor-to-ceiling glass and green tea
Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the facility features locally harvested cypress and cedar beams that integrate gracefully into the surrounding ridge.
The 200-metre outdoor wooden deck circles the building for an open panorama, while the expansive glass windows keep the scenery continuous even on windy days.
At the second-floor café Sabo Yume Terrace (茶房夢テ라스), I stopped for local Shizuoka green tea and sweets—a calm place to pause and take in the view.
Kites in the garden
Coming down from the observation deck to the open lawn below, several children were flying kites.
With the wide grass field and open sky, it had a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere distinct from the observatory deck.

Nearby Lunch Tip — Nippondaira Hotel
Located right next to Yume Terrace, ‘All Day Dining The Terrace’ on the 1st floor of Nippondaira Hotel offers a lunch buffet with floor-to-ceiling window views overlooking the lawn gardens and Mt. Fuji. Note that it is operated separately by the hotel and is not part of Yume Terrace; prior reservation is strongly recommended due to high demand.

- From JR Shizuoka Station North Exit (Bus Stop #11): Take the Shizutetsu Justline Bus (Nihondaira Line toward Nihondaira Ropeway), approx. 40 mins to the terminus, then a 5-min walk.
- From JR Higashi-Shizuoka Station South Exit: Same bus route, approx. 25 mins.
- By Taxi: Approx. 25 mins from JR Shizuoka Station, approx. 20 mins from JR Shimizu Station.

- Approx. 30 mins from Tomei Expressway Shizuoka IC or Shimizu IC.
- Free parking available (approx. 140 passenger cars, 20 buses).

Sabo Yume Terrace on the 2nd floor offers local sencha, hojicha, matcha and seasonal confectionery.
Recommended Visit Duration
Around 30–40 minutes for the observation deck and corridor, or 1 to 1.5 hours if stopping by the café to relax and take photos.
Live Mt. Fuji Camera
Visibility of Mt. Fuji is heavily dependent on weather and cloud cover. Checking the official live webcam on the Yume Terrace website before heading out helps ensure clear views.
Nearby Recommendation
Nihondaira Ropeway is a 3-minute walk away. A 5-minute ropeway ride connects directly to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, making it a convenient combination itinerary.
