On January 4, 2026, I went to Izumiya (お食事処 いづみや) for a late breakfast that turned into lunch.
I had looked the restaurant up before going. It felt less like a tourist stop and more like a neighborhood place for familiar Japanese food: grilled fish, set meals, udon and other everyday dishes.

The parking area was not directly in front of the restaurant. There was a map by the entrance, and I had to loop around the block to reach the separate spaces. Once I found them, there was plenty of room when I visited.

A simple dish, but the grilling made the difference
I ordered a grilled-fish set meal.
The tray looked almost like an everyday meal you might have at home in Japan: rice, miso soup, grilled fish and a few small sides. Nothing about the ingredients was meant to be flashy.
Then I started eating the fish.
The seasoning was pleasantly salty, but what stood out most was the crisp skin. It made me notice how much the result of something as simple as grilled fish can change depending on how well it is cooked.
Rice good enough to eat on its own
The rice was just as satisfying.
Each grain stayed distinct and light rather than soft or sticky, and it was good enough to eat by itself. A bite of the salty fish on top made the combination even better.
We also had a warm bowl of udon. It was another familiar dish rather than something unusual, which suited the meal perfectly.
There was no rare ingredient or elaborate presentation to remember.
Instead, this was one of those meals that showed how good familiar food can be when the basics are handled well. That was enough to make a very ordinary-looking brunch in Fujiyoshida stay with me.
