On the evening of January 1, 2026, I dropped my bags at the hotel and went back out for ramen.

The destination was Ramen DANBO Shizuoka Tokiwacho. I had not planned a sightseeing route, so the walk there and back simply followed whatever streets caught my attention.

Winter lights along Aoba Symbol Road

As I walked through central Shizuoka, the trees along Aoba Symbol Road (青葉シンボルロード) were covered in lights.

Shizuoka City describes Aoba Symbol Road as a roughly 500-metre symbolic street and open space in the city centre. Winter illumination is a recurring feature here. For the 2025–2026 season I saw, the city recorded about 170,000 LED lights, with the display scheduled to continue through February 15, 2026.

The photos look bright, but the city itself felt surprisingly quiet for such a central area. There were people out walking, yet the New Year’s night atmosphere was calm enough to take the lights in slowly.

From the lights to Shizuoka Oden Street

A little farther on, the mood changed completely.

I reached the area known as Shizuoka Oden Street, including Aoba Oden Street and Aoba Yokocho in Tokiwacho. The official city tourism guide describes these alleys as a cluster of Shizuoka-oden specialists and one of the city’s characteristic night scenes.

I did not stop for oden that night because I was already on my way to ramen. Still, the lanterns and older alleyway scenery felt completely different from the modern streets just outside, so I stopped for a few minutes to look around.

Quiet alleys on the way back

After ramen, I spent more time on the smaller streets than the main roads as I walked back.

It was not a walk built around a particular attraction. That was the point: unfamiliar streets, winter lights and quiet alleys came together naturally and became my first impression of Shizuoka at night.
